Golden Dorado Fly Fishing on the Paraná
Set on the upper Paraná River in Argentina’s Corrientes province, Suindá Lodge offers direct access to one of the best Golden Dorado fisheries in South America. Known for their aggressive strikes and acrobatic fights, dorado here regularly reach double-digit weights. Anglers also have the chance to target hard-hitting pira pita and surface-feeding pacú, creating the potential for a freshwater grand slam.
With space for just eight guests, the lodge ensures an intimate, personalized experience. Fishing is done from custom-designed skiffs on the clear waters of the Paraná, allowing for exceptional sight-fishing in a diverse, wildlife-rich environment. Experienced guides lead both fly and gear anglers through some of the most productive stretches of the river.
Accommodations are comfortable and well-appointed, complemented by top-tier Argentine cuisine, fine wine, and excellent service. Suindá combines exciting multispecies fishing with authentic hospitality in one of Argentina’s most scenic and unspoiled river systems.
Argentina offers some of the world’s finest freshwater dorado fishing, particularly in the vast Rio de la Plata system and the remote Ibera Wetlands. Nervous Waters has been a pioneer in these fisheries, guiding anglers to Golden Dorado an aggressive, powerful, and acrobatic gamefish unique to South America.
The Rio de la Plata Basin stretches across five countries and features a mix of clear freestone rivers, marshes, and lagoons. This variety creates ideal conditions for sight-fishing dorado, especially on the upper Paraná River. While dorado over 30 kg have been caught, fish in the 4–5 kg range provide excellent sport on a fly rod.
This area also offers the rare opportunity to target Pacu and Pira Pita. Pacu feed on fruit and are typically sight-fished beneath trees, while Pira Pita strike aggressively at topwater flies. Together with dorado, they form a unique freshwater grand slam.
Fishing days are split between early mornings and late afternoons, with a midday break at the lodge to avoid the heat. Guides adjust each session based on weather and river conditions.
Fly fishing gear should be suited to tropical conditions, with strong rods, floating and sinking lines, and heavy backing. Flies range from large, flashy streamers to topwater mouse and fruit patterns. Wire tippet is essential for dorado due to their sharp teeth.
This dynamic fishery combines challenging fishing with remarkable biodiversity, making it one of South America’s most rewarding fly-fishing destinations.
Nervous Waters’ dorado fishing camp is located near Itatí in Corrientes, Argentina. Elevated above a scenic bluff, the stilted lodge offers panoramic views of the Paraná River and its surroundings. The property includes three two-bedroom cabins with private bathrooms, connected to the main dining area by wooden walkways. A short walk from the rooms brings guests to the water’s edge and some of the river’s most productive fishing zones.
The lodge accommodates up to eight anglers in shared rooms (single occupancy upon availability). Amenities include a dining room, bar, fly shop, fly-tying space, Wi-Fi, housekeeping, and laundry service. Guests also have access to loaner rods and other fishing gear.
Meals at the lodge highlight fresh, locally sourced ingredients combining regional meats, produce, and traditional flavors with refined culinary techniques. The cuisine features classic Argentine dishes, from asados and yacaré appetizers to fresh-baked breads and creative desserts.
Meals are complemented by world-class Argentine wines from Bodega Catena Zapata, renowned for producing some of the country’s finest vintages. Dining at the lodge is designed to reflect the same level of excellence as the fishing experience, offering a rich culinary immersion into the region’s heritage.
