The Pluma River

Introduction -

This is one of the world’s most extraordinary fishing adventures. Deep in the Bolivian jungle, anglers chase Golden Dorado, Pacú, and Yatorana in remote waters teeming with wildlife, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and vibrant native culture. It’s destination fly fishing at its wildest.

Perched above the Pluma and Secure Rivers’ confluence, Pluma Lodge offers access to multiple rivers and beats, including the Pluma, upper Pluma, Itirizama, and Secure. The lodge features six single rooms with private baths and serves as a comfortable base in the heart of the jungle.

The Pluma River itself is a clear, freestone stream running along the Mosetenes Mountains. Its wide, smooth gravel banks make for easier wading, while upstream sections become more rugged. All four Tsimane species Dorado, Pacú, Yatorana, and Surubí can be found in its waters.

Fishing

Tsimane offers one of the most unique fly fishing adventures on Earth chasing giant Golden Dorado, Pacú, and Yatorana in clear, jungle rivers untouched by time. These fish are powerful, smart, and lightning-fast, demanding stealth, accurate casting, and fast reflexes.

Fishing is done by wading through diverse terrain, from smooth gravel beds to boulder-strewn rapids. The best season is May to October, during the massive Sabalo and Dorado migration. Each day, anglers explore fresh water, thanks to a rotating beat system and small-group approach.

All fishing is catch-and-release with barbless hooks. These fish have serious teeth, so careful handling is essential for your safety and theirs.

Tackle includes 8–9 weight rods with floating and intermediate lines, heavy fluorocarbon leaders, and knottable wire. Proven flies include Andino Deceivers, Puglisi streamers, poppers, sliders, and big terrestrial bugs like the Chernobyl Ant.

Waders should pack quick-dry gear, felt-soled boots (no rubber), and a waterproof pack. With its wild beauty, fierce fish, and raw remoteness, Tsimane is fly fishing’s final frontier.

Accommodations

Despite its remote jungle setting, Pluma Lodge offers surprising comfort and style. The main lodge is built from sustainable local wood and includes five double rooms for up to eight anglers and a host. Each room has a private bathroom, spring beds, hot water, and full electricity. Free Wi-Fi, laundry service, and a well-stocked fly shop add convenience, while a cozy living and dining space serves international dishes paired with top wines from Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia. An all-inclusive bar offers spirits and specialty cocktails.

Guests can also explore two remote out-camps on the upper Pluma and Itirizama Rivers giving access to three pristine rivers: Pluma, Itirizama, and Secure. Each day, anglers fish fresh, untouched waters without repeating beats. Breakfast is made to order, streamside lunches are packed daily, and dinners celebrate fresh meats, vegetables, and fine wines. Special dietary requests are always welcome.
