Agua Negra

Crystal Clear Jungle Tributary

Introduction

Winding through wild terrain, the Agua Negra River is a hidden gem feeding the Sécure River—clear, shallow, and perfect for wet-wading adventure. The lower stretches drift slowly like a jungle floodplain, flanked by golden sandbanks and deep, shadowy runs teeming with aggressive Dorado and Yatorana. Head upstream and you enter one of Tsimane’s most thrilling zones: a rocky, crystal-clear river where sight casting reigns supreme. Here, every step upstream is a hunt, every cast a shot at powerful Dorado, stealthy Pacú, or lightning-fast Yatorana. It’s technical, raw, and deeply rewarding—true jungle fly fishing at its finest.

Fishing

The Secure River winds through jungle-covered mountains with crystal-clear waters, navigated by traditional dugout canoes powered by push poles or small engines. From Asunta Lodge to the confluence with the Agua Negra, anglers wade and drift through shallow runs, where trophy Dorado lie in wait among ideal ambush spots. The Agua Negra tributary, half the size of the Secure, hides massive Dorado and hefty Pacú in remote headwaters accessible by overnight camps, untouched waters offering thrilling challenges. Sight fishing here demands stealth, precision, and quick reflexes, with larger flies and expert guides essential for success.

Fishing runs from May to October, coinciding with the epic migration of millions of Sabalo and Dorado racing to spawning grounds. Besides Dorado, anglers can expect large Pacú, Yatorana, occasional Surubi, and rare Amazonian Dorado varieties. Tsimane’s strict catch-and-release policy, barbless hooks, and rotating beats protect the fishery. Most fishing involves wet wading across varied riverbeds from sandy banks and volcanic rock shoals to boulder-strewn stretches requiring sturdy felt-soled boots and solid stamina.

Recommended gear includes 8-9 weight rods, one rigged with a floating line and another with an intermediate tip, paired with strong fluorocarbon leaders and wire tippets. Saltwater hooks and jungle-specific lines improve hook-ups. The local fly shop stocks essentials and proven patterns like the Andino Deceiver and foam poppers for explosive surface strikes. Dress in quick-drying long pants and shirts, neoprene socks, and waterproof backpacks to navigate slippery river bottoms safely. Fly choices focus on baitfish, large insects, and fruit imitations. Dark streamers with colorful tails and foam poppers provoke aggressive strikes, while large terrestrial insect imitations like the Chernobyl Ant excel for Pacú and Yatorana.
